Trends, amends, odds and ends, or the color palette for 2016

Dziś – druga część przewidywań, co nas czeka w przyszłym roku ze złocistą ochrą w tle. Color Futures 2016, czyli przewodnik po trendach, podzielił paletę na cztery rozdziały. Każdy z nich został opatrzony komentarzem wybranego projektanta. To bardzo ciekawy pomysł, by pokazać, jak na teorię patrzą praktycy, czyli ludzie czynu.

O Color Futures pisałam we wspomnianej na początku wpisu części pierwszej, poświęconej kolorowi roku, czyli złocistej ochrze. Tegoroczne zestawienie nosi tytuł „Looking both ways” („Patrząc w obu kierunkach”). Obu kierunkach, czyli w przeszłość i przyszłość. Złocista ochra łączy tradycję z cybercodziennością; pachnącą kawę i babcine ciasteczko z wysoką technologią internetu i smartfonów. Taka też jest towarzysząca jej paleta – chwilami odważna, a jednak bezpieczna, łagodnie wprowadzająca nowoczesność do przyjaznych wnętrz.

Today – the second part of forecasts considering the upcoming year in (interior) design, backgrounded by ochre gold. Color Futures 2016, a trend guide, divided the palette into four sections. Each of them has been commented by a designer. It’s a very interesitng way to show how the theory can be adapted by practitioners, or men of action.

I explained what Color Futures is in the previous post on the color of the year, namely ochre gold. This year’s guide has been titled „Looking both ways”. Both ways means into the past and into the future. Ochre gold combines tradition with cyber ambient; an aromatic coffee and a grandma’s cake with the hi-tech of the Internet and smartphones. And so is the assigned color palette – sometimes bold, however safe and gently introducing modernity into cozy interiors.

Let’s get the party started! Part one:

„Heritage & Future”, czyli „Dziedzictwo i przyszłość”. Motto: Przewidywać przyszłość i doceniać przeszłość.

Tę sekcję skomentował Anthony Roussel, brytyjski designer tworzący architektoniczną biżuterię i elementy wyposażenia wnętrz, na przykład takie panele z drewna, jak na poniższym zdjęciu. Paletę „Heritage and Future” interpretuje następująco: „To patrzenie na tradycyjne rzemiosło i rozumienie go w nowoczesny sposób. Interpretuję to przez pryzmat ikat, czyli azjatycką technikę tkacką”.

„Heritage and Future”. Motto: Anticipating the future and appreciating the past.

It was commented by Anthony Roussel, a British designer of jewelry and interior elements as wooden panels shown on the picture below. He understands the „Heritage and Future” palette as follows: „Looking at a traditional craft and interpreting that in a modern way. My interpretation has been influenced by Ikat, which is an Asian weaving technique”.

Autorzy Color Futures 2016 opowiadają z kolei tak: wielu producentów, co było widać na przykład podczas iSaloni w Mediolanie, podkreśla tradycje swojej firmy i odwołuje się do jej historii, co ma zbudować zaufanie klienta. Vintage jest zestawiane z nowoczesnością.

„Przekładając to na kolory, widać czerwienie odzwierciedlające bogatą przeszłość, lecz także czuć ducha współczesności, skierowanego na to, co przed nami”.

As the experts of Color Futures 2016 explain: many producers, what was to be seen for example at this year’s iSaloni in Milan, underline their brands’ traditions and history, what builds up their clients’ trust. They juxtapose vintage and modernity.

„Translated into a colour palette, we see the reds that reflect our rich heritage, but also have a bright contemporary feel that points to the future”.

Part two:

„Word and Pictures”, czyli „Słowa i obrazy”. Motto: Obraz może być wart tysiąca słów, jednak czy przy tak dużym przeciążeniu obrazami bardziej wierzymy słowu pisanemu?

Zoe Murphy, brytyjska projektantka mebli, skomentowała: „Poproszono mnie o interpretację rozdziału 'Słowa i Obrazy’. Te kolory to właściwie pastele i nawiązują do papirusów, ale są tam także barwy głębokie jak szaro-grafitowy. Paleta ponadto zawiera kolory przefiltrowane, przydymione, kojarzone z mediami społecznościowymi. Barwą można zmieniać nastrój człowieka i jego stosunek do danego przedmiotu”.

Na marginesie: pisałam o Zoe już wcześniej, a nawet miałam okazję poznać ją osobiście podczas Tent London 2014. Pokazała tam ciekawą brytyjsko-meksykańską kolekcję mebli.

Part two: „Words and Pictures”. Motto: A picture may paint a thousand words but with so much imagery overloading us, do we trust the written word more?

Zoe Murphy, a British designer, commented on this: „I was given the Words & Pictures trend to work with, the colours are quite pastel and represent parchment papers, but also some deep colours like graphite grey. There is some suggestions of filters within the colours aswell, such as smoky colours that are associated with social media. Colour is a way of really changing the mood of people and the mood that people have towards a piece.”

BTW: I love Zoe’s design. I have written on her twice before and even met her personally at Tent London 2014. She showcased an interesting British-Mexican furniture collection then.

Autorzy o palecie „Words and Pictures”: Czasy, w których żyjemy, to dokumentowanie naszego życia i pokazywanie go w mediach społecznościowych. Wiąże się to ze skracaniem tekstu i zastępowaniem go obrazem. Ten z kolei może zostać przerobiony w programie graficznym, więc nie ma pewności, czy można mu ufać. W efekcie, słowa zyskały nowy wymiar, na przykład w kontekście kaligrafii jako sztuki. Widać to nawet we wnętrzach i architekturze, gdzie ozdoby typograficzne są bardzo popularne. Słowa i obrazy zaczęły się dopełniać.

„Korespondująca paleta zawiera niebieskość atramentu i szarość grafitu w kontraście do odcieni znanych z filtrów w smartfonach i mediach społecznościowych”.

Experts on „Words and Pictures”: Times we live in stand for documenting and posting on social media almost every moment from our lives. It’s strictly related to shortcoming of word usage and replacing words with pictures. They, on the other side, can be changed in a graphic program. So, are we sure we can trust them? At the end of the day, words reached a new dimension, for example in the art of caligraphy. You can see it in interiors and architecture where typographic decorations are very popular. Words and images became complementary. 

„The corresponding colour palette uses the blue of ink and grey of graphite in contrast to tones familiar with smartphone and social media filters” .

Part three:

„Dark & Light”, czyli „Ciemność i światło”. Motto:  Od dawna mamy obsesję na punkcie światła, teraz jednak zaczynamy sobie zdawać sprawę z tego, że ciemność jest nam potrzebna, by wieść zdrowe, spokojne życie.

Jessica Light (przypadek?), projektantka splotów i ozdobnych wykończeń (między innymi dla brytyjskiego dworu, sułtana Brunei oraz kreatorów haute couture): „Kocham te kolory i kocham paletę 'Dark & Light’. Bardzo często stosuję cieniowane farbowanie i gradację barw. Fascynuje mnie, jak ciemność i światło wpływają na kolory oraz ich postrzeganie”.

„Dark & Light”. Motto: We have long been obsessed with light, but now realise we also need the dark for a healthy, well rested life.

Jessica Light, a British designer of macrame, trims and tassels (i.e. for the British royal court, Sultan of Brunei and haute couture creators): „I love these colours and I love the Dark & Light. I do a lot with dip-dye and graduation of colours. I am fascinated with light & dark and how they affect colours and views”.

Eksperci: Jednym z najważniejszych trendów w roku 2016 będzie istota ciemności (z czego ja, Dagmara, się cieszę, ponieważ „Jądro ciemności” to jedna z najbardziej fascynujących mnie książek). Kluczem jest wprowadzenie Godziny dla Ziemi, gdy miliony ludzi wyłączają światło, by pomóc w ochronie zanieczyszczonego środowiska. Ponadto, badania udowodniły, jak istotne są sen i wypoczynek. Co więcej, taka paleta odwołuje się do malarstwa holenderskiego XVII wieku, gdy ówcześni artyści osiągnęli mistrzostwo w uchwyceniu gry światła i cienia, tworzenia wyjątkowego nastroju chiaroscuro.

„Wiele kolorów z tej palety łagodnie łączy się ze sobą, przywołując odcienie zarówno zmroku, jak i świtu podczas 'złotej godziny'”.

The experts: One of the most important features for the next year will be the darkness and its meaning (which I, Dagmara, am happy for, because I consider „Heart of the Darkness” one of the most fascinating books). The key issue is the Earth Hour when millions of people turn off their home lights to help in protecting the polluted environment. Additionally, research trials have proven the harmfulness of sleep deprivation. Moreover, the palette revokes works of the 17th Century Dutch painters, artists who mastered the play of light and darkness and were able to create the unique mood of chiaroscuro. 

„Many of the colours in this palette blend seamlessly together, recalling the tones of both dusk and dawn during the ‘golden hour'”.

Part four:

„The Grid and Letting Go”, czyli „Siatka i uwolnienie”. Motto: Miejski styl życia wręcz się prosi o kontrolowany chaos.

Mark McClure, brytyjski artysta i projektant zainspirowany miejską geometrią: „Gdy spojrzysz na części kompozycji, zobaczysz, jak się dopasowują. To abstrakcyjne dzieło oparte na planie regularnej siatki, na kracie, choć poszatkowane”.

„The Grid and Letting Go”. Motto: Urban lifestyle yearns for controlled chaos.

Mark McClure, a British artist and designer, inspired by the urban geometry in his works: „The installation pieces will all line up eventually as you look at them. This is an abstract piece based on a grid, chopped up”.

Eksperci Color Futures 2016: To wolność, ale uporządkowana. To szukanie dodatkowych, nietypowych zajęć, ale bez wypadania z systemu. To lekcje tańca albo robienia na drutach, ale wracania potem do zwykłej pracy. To szukanie wolności w znanych granicach. Organiczne formy w designie, które mogą wydawać się dziwne, ale tak naprawdę wcale takimi nie są.

„Stąd, kolory tej palety są żywe i wesołe, a jednak wciąż trzymają się ryzach czarno-białej siatki planu”.

The Color Futures panel: It’s freedom but planned. It’s looking for extracurricular, untypical activities, however without falling out of the system. It’s dancing or knitting lessons and then coming back to a regular work. It’s living freely within familiar boundaries. It’s organic forms in design which could seem strange but they aren’t.

„Hence the colours in this palette are vivid and playful, yet still held back by the black and white of the grid.”

Przyszły rok zapowiada się ciekawie, choć w sumie nie zaskakuje. Tendencje vintage pojawiają się już od pewnego czasu. Teraz czekamy na Pantone. Jak myślicie? Będzie niespodzianka?

The next year is going to be quite interesting, however not astonishing. Vintage tendencies have been featured for a while. Now we are waitng for Pantone. How do you think? Will they surprise us?
