Pantone’s Color of the Year, or 18-1438 shades of Marsala

Nowy Rok, nowy tydzień, nowy wpis, nowy kolor. Marsala. Według Pantone, to ona właśnie będzie królować przez najbliższych dwanaście miesięcy. Ta ciepła, nasycona, głęboka i gęsta barwa nie ma nic, ale to nic, wspólnego z neonową i z lekka stukniętą Radiant Orchid, która właśnie przekazała koronę.

I jeśli ktoś miał problem, co zrobić z miksem fioletu i purpury w domu, teraz może odetchnąć z ulgą; będzie łatwej pójść z prądem trendu przez zakręty tędy, tamtędy, wszędy i owędy (a teraz powtórzmy to zdanie, ale szybciej).

Fakt, że gdy Pantone ogłosił swoją decyzję, odczułam niedosyt, a nawet rozczarowanie. Dlaczego? – myślałam. – Dlaczego kolejny (po Guilford Green wskazanym przez Bejmanin Moore) klasyczny kolor? Dlaczego wszyscy się na mnie uwzięli? Wznosząc oczy i ręce w geście protestu ku wnętrzarskiemu niebu, rozejrzałam się i zobaczyłam, że w sumie mam wokół siebie sporo rzeczy, które swobodnie można na Pintereście dodać do tablicy o nazwie „Marsala”.

Zacznijmy jednak od olśnienia, które sprawiło, że poczułam dumę i samozadowolenie. Otóż zdałam sobie sprawę, że barwa ta jest mocno obecna w aranżacjach z przerabianej tu przez nas wielokrotnie „Choinkowej książki marzeń, prezentów i wrażeń”. Katalog ten przygotowałyśmy jeszcze zanim Pantone nadało w świat komunikat numer 18-1438, co po ludzku oznacza „marsala”. Co więcej, wymyśliłyśmy całkiem podobną stylizację!

A new year, a new week, a new post, a new color. Marsala. According to Pantone, it will reign for the next twelve months. This warm, saturated, deep and thick color has literally nothing in common with the slightly insane Radiant Orchid, which has already passed its crown on.

And if someone found it problematic how to deal with a blend of violet and purple, now it’s time to take a relaxing breath for it will be easier to go with the trends, on and on, inside out, upside down, you name it.

I admit, when Pantone announced their decision I felt a bit unsatisfied, or even disappointed. Why? – I thought. – Why another classic color (after Benjamin Moore’s Guilford Green)? Why has everybody set on me? I’ve raised my hands and gaze to heaven in a silent scream but then I realised that in fact I’m kind of surrounded by things that could be freely pinned to the „Marsala” board.

However, let’s start with a revelation that made me feel proud and self-satisfied. Namely, it got me that the color is strongly present in stylings from „The Christmas Book of Dreams, Gifts and Emotions”, widely presented here many times . We had prepared the spoken catalogue sometime before Pantone spread their annoncement Nr 18-1438 which means in human: Marsala. Moreover, we came up with a quite similar arrangement!

Marsala jest – moim zdaniem – kolorem paradoksalnie trudnym do jednoznacznego zdefiniowania. Od światła i pory dnia zależy, jaki przybierze odcień, dlatego wydaje się, że ma ich, zgodnie z numerem katalogowym, 18-1438. Tysiące, a nawet setki, jak mawiał klasyk. Od koniaku po burgund. Od kasztanowego po sztucznie czerwony. Jak granat (owoc), jak herbata, a przede wszystkim – jak bardzo słodkie wino (od którego zresztą kolor wziął nazwę). Marsalę zobaczyłam nawet w benedyktyńskim słoiku miodu z pigwą.

Jakby jednak nie patrzeć, jest to kolor ciepły i zimowy. Otulający i rozgrzewający krew. Idąc tym tropem, dojrzałam meksykańskie konotacje tej barwy. No i jednak uzbiera się tych 18-1438 odcieni, prawda?

I think Marsala is ambiguous and hard to define conclusively. It depends on the time of the day and the strenght of the light which hue is to be seen at the particular moment. That’s why you may think it has 18-1438 hues and tones, as indicated in its catalogue name. Thousands, or even hundreds, as one of The Classics used to say. From cognac to burgundy. From maroon to the artificial red.  Like a pomegranate, like tea, and first of all like a very sweet wine (the name marsala originated from it, indeed). I’ve found Marsala also in a jar with the Benedictine honey and quince.

Nevertheless, no matter how you look at the color it’s still warm and perfect for winter. Wrapping like a blanket and soothing. Taking this direction I discovered Mexican roots of the color. As you can see, it’s possible to gather 18-1438 hues and tones of Marsala.

Jak jednak być niezwykle trendy, nie przemalowując mieszkania? Wiadomo – idziemy w dodatki i detale, na przykład książki. Są tacy (ja do nich nie należę), którzy lubią tę modę sprzed dwóch-trzech lat na układanie biblioteczki według kolorów okładek. Na potrzeby wpisu pokusiłam się o taką mini aranżację. W tle widać jedną z moich ukochanych, ręcznie wyszywanych arabskich poduszek i filiżankę z herbatą truskawkową. Też oczywiście z marsalskiej palety.

But how to be trendy without repainting the entire apartment? For the start use details and small elements like books. There are people (I’m not one of them) who like the idea of ordering books by their colors, what was very in some two or three years ago. For the sake of this post I made a small arrangement in this way. In the background you can see one of my favourite handmade embroided Arabic pillows and a cup of strawberry tea. All strongly related to Marsala, of course.

A propos etnicznych konotacji marsali, której rodowód jest włoski, pokusiłam się o aranżację z Polską i Maghrebem w tle. I to dosłownie, ponieważ – jak się okazuje – Bolesławiec świetnie wygląda z Kolorami Maroka; kolorami, do których, jak widać, należy marsala.

Going back to the ethnic connotations of Marsala and its Italian origin, I composed a styling inspired by both Poland and the Maghreb. Literally inspired because – as you can see – the famous Polish hand-painted pottery of Bolesławiec matches with the colors of Morocco perfectly; colors which apparently include Marsala.

A tu – ciekawostka. To zdjęcie zrobiłam w Mediolanie podczas ubiegłorocznych targów iSaloni. Ekspozycja mojego ukochanego Roche Bobois miała elementy obu kolorów tego roku – Guilford Green oraz Marsala. Jakby to powiedział baca? „Prorok jaki, czy co?” (kawał bardzo stary; zachowam godność i nie rozwinę tematu…)

Here – a tidbit. I took this picture in Milan during the last year’s iSaloni fair. The showcase of my beloved Roche Bobois freatured elements in both colors of the year 2015 – Guilford Green and Marsala. Did I missed a crystal ball then?

Przejdźmy się teraz po wnętrzach skąpanych w cieple marsali. Zacznijmy od total looku. Dla mnie to trochę za dużo na raz, ale – o dziwo – dramatu nie ma. To wnętrza bardzo klasyczne, nastrojowe, raczej do wypoczynku niż do zabawy.

Now, let’s focus on interiors warmed by Marsala. We can start with the total look. I feel a bit overwhelmed but – surprise! – it’s not so bad after all. The interiors are very classic, moody, more for relaxing than throwing a party.

Marsala bardzo podoba mi się w detalach. Na przykład, na tle czarnej ściany wygląda naprawdę pięknie. Swoją drogą, niedługo zajmę się czernią (o której już kiedyś pisałam), ponieważ barwa ta od jakiegoś czasu coraz częściej gości w aranżacjach najlepszych stylistów.

I’m very fond of Marsala in details. For example, it looks amazing on the black background. By the way, soon I’m going to deal with black (what I’ve done already some time ago) for the color is more and more present in stylings of the best interior designers.

Ech, te kolory roku… Z jednej strony, człowiek czeka na nie z niecierpliwością i ciekawością. Z drugiej, jak się okazuje, w sumie zawsze można znaleźć w domu przedmioty w barwach, które sprawią, że będziemy taaaaaacy modni. Bez wysiłku. Ładnie i łatwo. Uwielbiam tę grę.

Well, well, well, all the colors of the year… On one hand you wait for them impatiently and excited. On the other hand, at the end of the day, you can always bump into relevantly coloured things in your own apartment; things which make you sooo in. Effortlessly. Soft and easy. I love this game.
