Deyan Sudjic: the exclusive interview for FORelements (!!!) and his third book published in Poland. And there’s more…

Zacznę od wyznania, szczerego i płynącego z głębi mojego czarnego serca: jestem psychofanką. Obiektem moich obsesyjnych zachowań jest Deyan Sudjic, dyrektor londyńskiego Design Museum oraz jeden z obecnie najwybitniejszych krytyków designu i architektury. Absolutnie, totalnie, całkowicie i bezgranicznie uwielbiam sposób, w jaki opowiada o projektowaniu i tym większym, i tym mniejszym, także w formie filmowej, ponieważ ma na koncie obraz o Normanie Fosterze.

Byłam bliska wylewu, gdy dostałam wiadomość, że Deyan Sudjic czeka na mnie w swoim biurze w Londynie, gdzie się ze mną spotka i porozmawia.

Rzecz miała miejsce podczas ostatniego London Design Festival, niedługo po wydaniu w Polsce „B jak Bauhaus”. Choć Deyan Sudjic ma na koncie kilkanaście pozycji, czytelnik znad Wisły miał na razie okazję poznać dwie: „Język rzeczy” oraz właśnie „B jak Bauhaus” (obie wydane przez Karakter). Aż do wczoraj (8 lipca), gdy w warszawskim Muzeum Narodowym odbyła się premiera trzeciej, czyli „Kompleks gmachu. Architektura władzy” (wydana przez Centrum Architektury). Oczywiście, od razu tam pogalopowałam (gnały mnie żądza posiadania tej książki oraz czas). Autora niestety nie było, ale zrekompensował mi to ściskany w garści, pachnący nowością tom.

Zresztą, w kontekście moich spotkań z Deyanem Sudjiciem słowo „galop” jest już jakby taką małą świecką tradycją. Londyński wywiad bowiem wisiał na włosku, ponieważ… ale tę historię opowiadam w nagraniu poniżej. To zapis mojego spotkania z Deyanem Sudjiciem oraz wizyty w programie Magdy Mikołajczuk w radiowej Jedynce, która ten materiał wyemitowała.

For the start I have a confession to make, honest and straight from the bottom of my blacK heart: I’m a psychofan. The victim of my obsessive behaviour is Deyan Sudjic, the director of the Design Museum in London, one of the most respected design and architecture critics. Absolutely, totally, entirely and deeply I adore his way of telling people about design, both on the micro and the macro scale and even as a film maker since he’s responsible for a film about Norman Foster.

I’ve almost had a stroke when I got the e-mail informing me that Mr. Sudjic would wait for me in his London office and was ready to give me an interview.

It was during the London Design Festival, soon after launching the Polish edition of his book „B is for Bauhaus”. Deyan Sudjic has published quite a lot but Polish readers had the opportunity to get only two of his books, i.e. „Language of Things” and the above mentioned „B is for Bauhaus” (both published by Karakter). Yet until yesterday (July, the 8th) when, in the National Museum in Warsaw, the third title was presented to the public, namely „The Edifice Complex: How the Rich and Powerful Shape the World” (by Centrum Architektury). Obviously, I ran there immediately, propelled by my appetite for the book and by the lack of time). The author was not there but I was happy anyway because I got what I wanted – the brand new copy.

By the way, I guess all my encounters with Deyan Sudjic can be marked as „like a hurricane”; it has become a kind of tradition that I run for the occasion. As in London when I nearly missed the inteview because of all the obstacles, including loosing my way, repeatedly taking wrong directions on both sides of the Thames and then sprinting three times across two brigdes (I’m telling the whole story in the record below, however in Polish). Let me add that I’d been to the museum many times before but on that day I probably experienced some kind of a blackout. Nevertheless, I made it and the inteview was aired in the Polish Public Radio in December.

Wczorajszej premierze „Kompleksu architektury” towarzyszyły dwa wykłady. Jeden, poprowadzony przez Gabrielę Świtek, poświęcony był książce i między innymi krytycznemu podejściu autora do megalomańskich zapędów współczesnych architektów-gwiazdorów (z podobnym dystansem Mr Sudjic podchodzi też do projektantów-ikon popkultury, o czym powiedział mi podczas naszej rozmowy, już po wyłączeniu nagrywania). Drugi wykład – Nicolasa Grospierre’a (połączony z prezentacją jego zdjęć z serii „Gabinety Owalne”) – koncentrował się na związkach władzy z architekturą.

Wpis ten jest całkowicie poświęcony Deyanowi Sudjiciowi, więc pozwoliłam sobie dodać coś jeszcze, dorzucić coś extra, a mianowicie wizytę w jego londyńskim domu, wypełnionym książkami oraz ikonami designu. Oryginalnymi, prawdziwymi, cudownymi. Tutaj to one są najważniejsze. W urządzaniu tego na wskroś modernistycznego apartamentu pomagała projektantka Catherine Pawson, żona architekta-minimalisty Johna Pawsona, który z kolei jest autorem nowej siedziby Design Museum (otwarcie planowane na przyszły rok), a więc wszystko w rodzinie.

Poznajcie gospodarzy – Deyana Sudjicia i jego żonę, Sarę Miller, uznaną dziennikarkę. I zacznijmy od anegdoty, co w sumie świetnie się komponuje z ogromnym poczuciem humoru pana domu.

Ten czarny kształt leżący na stoliku „Laccio” Marcela Breuera (ok.1925 r.) to naczynie-rzeźba projektu Zahy Hadid dla Alessi, czyli „Niche Centerpiece with Interposable Elements”. W wywiadzie dla „Wall Street Journal”, Mr Sudjic opowiadał, że „zgubili z żoną instrukcję, więc nie potrafią tego właściwie poskładać, a wstydzą się zapytać, więc po prostu położyli wszystkie części na blacie”. Na wszelki wypadek dołączam zdjęcie projektu w formie sprzed zgubienia instrukcji, to tak gwoli ciekawości.

The yesterday premiere of “The Edifice Complex” consisted of two lectures. The first one, given by Gabriela Świtek, was on the book itself and, among others, on the author’s critical approach to megalomaniac ambitions of contemporary star architects (during our meeting Mr. Sudjic was talking off the record with a similar distance about designers who became pop icons). The second lecture – by Nicolas Grospierre (together with a presentation of his photo series “Oval Cabinets”) – focused on relations between architecture and power.

This text is entirely on Deyan Sudjic, so I let myself to do something more, to add something extra, namely to visit his London home, fulfilled with books and design icons. Original, genuine, wonderful. The to-the-core modernistic apartment was arranged with a help of Catherine Pawson, the wife of John Pawson, a minimalist architect who designed the new premises for the Design Museum (the opening planned for 2016), so everything stays in the family.

Meet our hosts – Deyan Sudjic and his wife Sarah Miller, a reputed journalist. And let me start with a little anecdote perfectly reflecting Mr. Sudjic’s sense of humor.

The black object on the “Laccio” coffee table by Marcel Breuer (ca. 1925) is a sculpture-dish designed by Zaha Hadid for Alessi, namely “Niche Centerpiece with Interposable Elements”. In the interview for ”The Wall Street Journal” Mr. Sudjic revealed: “We lost the instructions of how to put it together and we’re too embarrassed to ask”, so they just laid the pieces on the table. W dalszej części salonu króluje ikona, czyli krzesło projektu Gerrita Rietvelda. Tak, ludzie mają takie rzeczy w domu! Ciekawostka: Projekt pochodzi z roku 1918, ale kolory dodano pięć lat później.

The focal point of the living room is the iconic Gerrit Rietveld chair. Yes, people have this kind of things in their homes! BTW: the chair was designed in 1918 but the colors were added five years later.

Tu: „Petit Comfort Chair” Le Corbusiera (pod oknem), a dalej – uwielbiany przez mnie Lounge Chair Charlesa & Ray Eamesów (projekt z 1956 roku). A propos, byłam w atelier, skąd pochodzą i gdzie są ręcznie robione, o czym opowiem Wam później. W rozmowie z „Wall Street Journal”, Deyan Sudjic wskazał ten fotel jako przykład obiektu ponadczasowego, po którym nie widać wieku, w przeciwieństwie do zaprojektowanych w tym samym okresie słynnych „płetw” Cadillaca Eldorado, które przynależą do swojej epoki i do żadnej innej. Oczywiście.

That was designed in the same year as     the Cadillac Eldorado fins, which now look so dated”. Of course.

Study room: just like that, no problemo, here we have a Mies van der Rohe chair (the black one) and an Arne Jacobsen lamp. Nevertheless, the main part is played by books and there is more than 3 000 of them!

Jeśli modernizm, to wzorcowy! Kuchnia od razu przywiodła mi na myśl kuchnię frankfurcką Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1927 r.), czyli wzór ergonomii i funkcjonalności. A że diabeł tkwi w szczegółach, na podłogę położono jodłowe deski (Dinesen Douglas).

If you want modernism, you get it exemplary! Thus, the kitchen reminds me of the Frankfurt one designed by Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (1927 r.) as a model for ergonomy and functionality. Since the devil’s in the detail, the flooring is made of fir planks (Dinesen Douglas).

Gzyms kominka pochodzi z XIX wieku, a na niej sztuka wieku XX, czyli między innymi: wazon Shiro Kuramaty (tego od szkła, akrylu i metalowej siatki), grafika Henry’ego Moore’a oraz rzeźba Rona Arada (w którym się kocham). I do tego kultowa zapalniczka Zippo. Design przecież jest wszędzie!

The mantelpiece is from the 19th Century, however the art pieces on it are from the 20th. Among them there are: a vase Shiro Kuramata (he’s known for his glass, acryl and metal mesh designs), a Henry Moore print and a sculpture by Ron Arad (I’m in love with him). More, what you can find there is a Zippo lighter. Design is everywhere, isn’t it?

Powyższe drzwi, również z apartamentu Mr Sudjicia, niech będą takim symbolem otwarcia na nowe doznania dzięki jego książkom i opowieściom o architekturze i designie. Mam wielką nadzieję spotkać go ponownie i ponownie cieszyć się, że są ludzie z taką pasją i wiedzą. I chcą się tym dzielić. Zaklepuję! Pierwsza! Hold on tight to your dreams!
