Brussels Design September, or the colors of Pantone Hotel

Dopiero wróciłam z Paryża, gdzie na targach Maison et Objet zbierałam dla Was inspiracje oraz zapowiedzi tego, co nas czeka w kolejnym sezonie, a już zaraz potem udałam się do Brukseli, gdzie w najlepsze trwa Brussels Design September. Wrzesień to bardzo pracowity miesiąc, ale to dobrze, ponieważ dzięki temu nie będziemy się nudzić. A w stolicy Belgii pójdziemy do naprawdę fajnego miejsca, jakim jest Pantone Hotel; tam właśnie mieszkają kolory. Zaczynamy (byłam nawet dobrze przygotowana w kwestii palety barw)!

I’ve just come back from Paris where at the Maison et Objet fair I was collecting for you all the inspirations and forecasts for the next season, and right after that I went to Brussels where the Design September is at its best. September is a very busy month but it’s OK for we’ll never have a chance to get bored. Now, when in the Belgian capital city, let’s go to a really nice place, namely the Pantone Hotel; the place in fact inhabited by colors. Follow me (I was even good prepared in terms of my color palette).

Pantone nieraz już gościło na łamach FORelements, z reguły przy okazji przedstawiania koloru roku. Były więc:

– kolor roku 2013 szmaragdowa zieleń Emerald 17-5641;

– kolor roku 2014 promienna purpura Radiant Orchid 18-3224, na dodatek w dwóch odsłonach; tę choinkowo-świąteczną Pantone pokazało na swojej stronie na FB!;

– kolor roku 2015 Marsala 18-1438;

– spacer po jesiennym lesie, dzięki czemu powstała niczego sobie mozaika.

(Swoją drogą, ciekawe są propozycje Pantone na pierwsze półrocze 2016, zestawione przez homify – link tutaj. Czekają nas spokojne i łagodne barwy, co w sumie się zgadza, biorąc pod uwagę wnioski płynące z Maison et Objet, gdzie stanowczo dominował dom ciepły, naturalny, vintage i przyjazny).

Dziś jednak stanowczo wyjdziemy poza wyżej wymienioną paletę, bowiem Pantone Hotel to symfonia barw, ale – co bardzo ciekawe – nie ma tu oczekiwanego szaleństwa, chaosu oraz orgii. Założeniem projektu (którego autorami są Michel Penneman i Olivier Hannaert) bowiem było to, by białe ściany uwypuklały barwy; by kolory były tu jak farby na obrazie. Tak więc towarzystwo jest wesołe, ale grzeczne. Ta metoda bardzo mi się podoba, czego dowodem może być projekt start-upowego biura, nad którym ostatnio pracowałam.

Wróćmy jednak do hotelu, gdzie już w recepcji wiemy, że będzie nieźle, bowiem wita nas kultowy projekt Rona Arada, czyli trójwymiarowy dywan-sofa Do-lo-rez dla Nanimarquina, który zresztą pokazywałam we wpisie o pikselach.

Pantone has been featured on FORelements many times, let me just remind you the main related posts:

– the color of the year 2o13 Emerald 17-5641;

– the color of the year 2014 Radiant Orchid 18-3224, presented here twice; the Christmas edition was even shown by Pantone on its FB fanpage;

– the color of he year 2015 Marsala 18-1438;

– a walk in a fall forest, what resulted in creating a quite fine mosaic. 

The today’s entry, however, won’t be based on the above mentioned colors as the Pantone Hotel stands for a symphony of hues but – what is really interesting – you’ll be disappointed if you’re expecting going wild with it, a chaos or an orgy. Nothing like that. The project (by Michel Penneman and Olivier Hannaert) is created as a contrast of white walls and many colors managed in a way to resemble light canvas and bold paints popping up on it. Thus, the elements are funny and vivid but not crazy and demanding. I like it, I like such way of putting things together, I’ve even used this approach in my recent design of a small start-up office.

Anyway, let’s go back to the hotel! And there, already at the entrance you can see an iconic piece by Ron Arad, the Do-lo-rez rug and sofa in one, or rather in 3. 3D. Moreover, I have featured this one in my post on pixels.

W dalszej części hotelu widać wyraźnie spokojne żonglowanie paletą Pantone na podkładzie między innymi betonowym. Sztuczka jednak polega na tym, że choć jest bardzo barwnie, te kolory nie męczą, a za każdym rogiem czai się niespodzianka. A to ażurowe ściany prowadzące do toalet, a to menu drinków na różowym wieszaczku w samych toaletach, a to ściana o zmiennym obrazie w kawiarni (podobny patent, projektu Amirko, możecie obejrzeć również w poście o pikselach. Wróżka jakaś czy co?).

In the further parts of the hotel you can see a calm juggling with the Pantone palette on a solid and concrete background. The thing is that even though there’s a lot of colors here they are not disturbing and dominating. Moreover, you can be surprised with what’s around every corner here: a lacelike wall by the toilets; a pink wall hanger with a drink menu inside in the very toilets; a wall with a changing surface pattern (an idea similar to this featured, again, in my post on pixels; maybe I should get myself a crystal ball, or what?).

Również na zewnątrz widać, że każde piętro ma własny kolor – od nasyconego po te spokojne.

While looking from the outside you can also notice that every floor has its own hue – from saturated to the softer ones.

To był świetnie spędzony czas. Nie dość, że wszędzie miałam te swoje ukochane kolory; nie dość, że design był na wyciągnięcie ręki (ach, ta Do-lo-rez!), to jeszcze obsługa była niezwykle przyjemna. Zresztą, za wszystkie te wymienione zalety Pantone Hotel dostał nagrody, przyznane przez: Tripadvisor (The Certificate of Excellence 2012), World Hospitality Awards (Best hotel novelty of the year 2010) oraz Travel & Leisure Design Awards 2011.

I jak tu nie kochać designu we wszystkich kolorach tęczy?

It was a great time my visit in the Pantone Hotel. I got colors I love; I got design within reach (ah, the Do-lo-rez!); I got the best service ever. By the way, all the mentioned advantages have been awarded, namely: Tripadvisor (The Certificate of Excellence 2012), World Hospitality Awards (Best hotel novelty of the year 2010) oraz Travel & Leisure Design Awards 2011.

So, is it even possible not to fall in love with design in all the colors of the rainbow?
