Design and art worth billions, or TEFAF fair in Maastricht

Podkład muzyczny (Background music): „Fiddler on the Roof” – „If I Were a Rich Man”

TEFAF collectors fair in Maastricht is a profoundly unique event – there come people who are expected to come. Every March for almost thirty years (since 1975 and Pictura Fine Art Fair) this supposedly oldest Dutch town becomes an undisputed capital city of Art – like the Classics used to say, „with a capital A” – and design of the 20th century. Thus, this kind of invitation is a real big thing.

TEFAF is a mecca for big shot collectors, museum representatives, owners of the world’s leading galleries and antique shops and for all those who are in their element among over a dozen thousands of object amounting to about 5,5 billions (!!!) dollars. Or they feel like sharks swimming through the see of gold. I chose to be a small duck in my own water of delight.

Trochę faktów niezbędnych, by zrozumieć fenomen TEFAF:

  • 275 najlepszych galerii na świecie, z adresami w 20 krajach;
  • 7 działów tematycznych (Starzy Mistrzowie; Dzieła Antyczne; Sztuka Nowoczesna i Współczesna; Fotografia; Biżuteria; Design XX wieku oraz Dzieła na Papierze);
  • 175 ekspertów światowej klasy w 29 specjalizacjach, weryfikujących każdy zaproponowany do wystawienia obiekt.

Few facts indispensable for understanding the TEFAF phonomenon:

  • 275 world’s leading galleries from 20 countries;
  • 7 categories (Old Master Paintings; antique Works of Art; Classical Modern and Contemporary Art; Photographs; Jewellery; Twentieth Century Design; Works on Paper);
  • 175 international experts in 29 different categories, who examine each single object to be exhibited.

A potem, „Alegoria węchu” zabłysnęła w Holandii.

The star of this year’s TEFAF was the recently identified painting by Rembrandt, from his early allegorical series depicting senses. It was found only few months ago in a small American auction house, verified and confirmed, so then the news has spread all over the world. Finally, the „Smell Allegory” was showcased at TEFAT, evoking the extreme interest.

For now, the humanity enjoys four Rembrandt’s allegorical paintings („Touch”, Sight”, „Hearing” and „Smell”), still desperately seeking for the fifth and last one, namely „Taste”. Anyone? Anything?

And now, Ladies and Gentlemen, first things first. What I saw and what I picked out from about 400 pictures I’d taken at TEFAF. Let’s start – of course – with design. Furniture, interiors, accessories, managed chronologically backwards. At the beginning – the contemporary ones, then – the noble vintage and at the end – unquestionable classics.
